Different Types of Animals

Animals come in all shapes and sizes, from the smallest insects to the largest mammals. They can be found in every corner of the globe, from the coldest deserts to the hottest rainforests. And they come in a staggering variety of forms, from the sleek and graceful lines of a cheetah to the bulky bulk of an elephant.

But despite their many differences, animals share certain common features. All animals are composed of cells, which are the basic units of life. Animals are able to move about in their environment and take in food and water to sustain themselves. And most animals reproduce by producing eggs or giving birth to live young.

Within these broad categories, however, there is immense diversity among animals. Birds, for example, are distinguished by their feathers, warm blood, and ability to fly.

Mammals, on the other hand, are characterized by their fur or hair, milk-producing mammary glands, and unique skeletal structures. Water animals such as fish and octopuses live in a completely different environment than land animals such as lions and tigers. And insects, which make up the largest group of animals on Earth, come in a bewildering array of shapes and sizes. The animal kingdom is truly a world unto itself.
